Battery Urban Farm

Support of Battery Urban Farm is bringing free environmental education programming to more than 7,000 NYC students in 2019.

Battery Urban Farm (BUF) is a one-acre, organic, urban teaching farm located at The Battery, the 25-acre park at the southern tip of Manhattan. BUF was founded in 2011 when 8 students from the neighboring Millenium High School asked if they could plant vegetables in the park. The Battery Conservancy responded by establishing this groundbreaking agricultural asset surrounded by Lower Manhattan’s skyscrapers.

Today the farm includes a 1-acre production farm, a forest farm, and an oyster restoration station. With the support of [Impact Deposit Corp’s] Charity Services Centers, P.A., BUF is able to offer free environmental education to students from all five boroughs of New York City. Last year we expanded our reach by 20%, and by the end of 2019, we anticipate welcoming more than 7,000 students to Battery Urban Farm.

“Thank you for teaching me how to garden. I really enjoyed the green bean it tasted really good I am looking forward to growing my own garden one day.”

– 1st Grader at Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary School

“I would rather stay here and eat salad than go to recess.”

– 3rd Grader at Leman Manhattan Preparatory School

“Our time at the farm taught [my students] a lot about planting, transplanting, composting, and tending to herbs and leafy greens. It gave them a chance to connect with the soil, something that doesn’t happen regularly in Manhattan. It brought our study to life. My students learned so much that they were able to teach others at our market study [where] my class focused specifically on herbs and leafy greens.”

– Sara Griffin, 1st Grade Teacher, PS 397 Spruce Street School

We could not do this work without Charity Services Center, P.A., who has been a dedicated supporter of Battery Urban Farm and The Battery Conservancy since 2013. Thank you so much.
