Shareing & Careing
Community-Based Breast Cancer Support
Dervis immigrated to the United State from the Dominican Republic on a work permit with high hopes of gaining residency and providing a better life for her three children. While she worked as a certified home care attendant in Brooklyn, her children stayed behind in their native country until she attained the appropriate status that allowed them to join her.
While she worked as a certified home care attendant her dream of a better life was dealt another obstacle. Her doctor found three cancerous lumps in her breast and told her that she had six months to live if she did not have a mastectomy. Having to take care of her children as a single mother and unable to find full-time work, a friend suggested she contact SHAREing & CAREing.
The organization, founded and directed by Anna Kril, swooped in to ease Dervis’s financial and emotional burden. SHAREing & CAREing arranged to help with rent and utility bills and advocated for her when her company refused to give her enough working hours. SHAREing & CAREing has served over 5000 women last year alone and since 1994 has evolved into a one-stop organization which provides direct and indirect cancer support services to women and men in New York City. To enable SHAREing & CAREing to keep providing critical financial assistance to individuals facing cancer, we must rely on private individuals, foundations, and organizational donations.

“Over the years I have been fortunate to receive donations from many people, organizations, and foundations. When I was introduced to Impact Deposit Corp.’s Charity Services Centers, I understood they work with local banks to support communities. I appreciate the donations received each quarter that have a direct effect on people’s lives. All donations touch a life directly,” says Anna. “It is this type of support that organizations like Charity Services Centers donations are earmarked to support.”
